General Airport Information

Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG) – “Makedonia” is the main aviation hub of Northern Greece and the gateway to Thessaloniki, the country’s second-largest city. Located in Mikra, roughly 13 km (8 mi) from the city center, SKG handles domestic, European, and seasonal intercontinental flights. The airport is compact, modern, and fully renovated under Fraport Greece, serving nearly 6 million passengers annually.

Terminals

Thessaloniki Airport consists of two terminals – the Main Terminal and the New Terminal (T2), connected internally via a footbridge. Together, they handle all domestic and international flights.

  • Main Terminal: Arrivals (ground floor), Departures (first floor), shops, cafés, and lounges.
  • Terminal 2 (T2): 28 check-in counters, 12 gates, duty-free zones, and additional dining/retail options.

Both terminals are within walking distance, and signage is clear in both Greek and English.

Tip: Check departure screens carefully — some flights use T2 gates even if check-in occurs in the Main Terminal.

Hotels

There is no on-site hotel directly attached to the airport. However, many accommodations are available within a 5–10 minute drive, especially in the areas of Perea, Thermi, and Kalamaria.

For broader hotel options — boutique, chains, and luxury — downtown Thessaloniki is only 20–30 minutes away, accessible by taxi, bus, or private transfer.

Parking

SKG offers five official parking areas with affordable prices compared to other European airports:

  • P4: Short-term parking (closest to the terminals).
  • P6, P7, P8: Long-term parking options with economical daily rates.
  • P5: Designated for coaches and pre-booked taxis.

Tip: Booking online in advance usually secures lower rates, especially in high season.

Layover at the Airport

Despite its smaller size, SKG provides enough services for a comfortable layover: cafés, restaurants, duty-free shops, lounges, free Wi-Fi, charging points, and seating areas. Families can use baby-care rooms and designated relaxation spaces.

Ground Transportation

Passengers can travel between SKG Airport and Thessaloniki via several transit options:

  • OASTH Bus: Budget-friendly route 01X/01N connects the airport with the city center (24/7).
  • Taxis: Available outside Arrivals; the ride to downtown takes ~25–30 minutes.
  • Private Transfers: Pre-bookable door-to-door services with fixed fares.
  • Car Rentals: Multiple local and international agencies operate inside the terminal.

Accessibility & Special Assistance

Thessaloniki Airport is fully accessible, offering elevator access, ramps, adapted restrooms, priority seating, and dedicated meeting points for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM). For a smooth experience, travelers should request assistance through their airline in advance.
